- The 990 series, which represents New Balance, was born in 1982 as a running shoe for on-road use. Developed with the latest technology, it was sold for $100, which was very expensive at the time. It became a hot topic when it advertised itself as "990 points out of 1000 points" in advertisements at the time, and has continued to evolve over 14 generations since then.
The 990v6's design eliminates the traditional midfoot saddle (the part that crosses the top of your foot) and instead has pigskin suede and synthetic leather overlays that flow from heel to toe over the mesh upper. .
This evolved-looking design is one of the most dramatic changes from the previous generation to this generation, but the biggest functional leap lies within. With the added cushioning, resilience, and lightness of the FuelCell midsole, the evolution of the 990 is more visible the more you look at it.

In 1906, New Balance was founded in Boston, USA as a manufacturer of arch support insoles and corrective shoes that cure flat feet.
The origin of the name "New Balance" means "to bring a sense of 'new' and 'balance' to the wearer." In the 1960s, we started manufacturing custom-made running shoes based on our know-how as a manufacturer of corrective shoes, which is possible only with a deep understanding of anatomical knowledge of the foot, orthopedics and exercise physiology.
Even now, while inheriting the tradition, we gather the latest technology and develop shoes that pursue better fit.
